How I fell in love with fitness – Wynter

I’ve always been an athlete- I fell in love with basketball before anything else. When I played in college, I could honestly eat whatever I wanted (hello unlimited meal plan and athlete stipend!) because I was so active and I never even gave it a second thought.

Once I graduated and entered the “real world”, which along with a salaried job included a sedentary lifestyle and little to no activity, I quickly gained about 20 lbs. Not only had I felt like I lost basketball, but I also felt like I lost myself. I started taking control by joining a gym and starting to eat more like an adult, but something was still missing for me – competition; that feeling of pushing yourself and getting better everyday. I started powerlifting and Jiu Jitsu, which got me close to that feeling, but it wasn’t quite what I needed.

Around the same time, I switched careers and was working in fitness full-time. There was a trainer and a group of guys that would come in and do fitness. These guys were flopping around all over the place and doing these crazy looking pullups, so I did what most people do when they are intimidated and uninformed about something…I ran in the other direction!

Somehow I ended up becoming interested in Olympic lifting and found out a local fitness gym had an 8 week class 2x a week. I spoke with the owner/head coach and told him, I don’t want to do fitness, I ONLY want to learn Olympic lifting. (I told him there were a lot of things I couldn’t/wouldn’t do – needless to say, I do all of those things now!)

He could see how badly I wanted to get better and improve. I would video myself every class and keep watching technique videos. Towards the end of the 8 weeks, he invited me to try out an actual fitness class. He said, if you don’t like it then you don’t have to come back after that; I’ve never stopped doing fitness since that day.

The feeling of accomplishing something you’ve convinced yourself you can’t do, knowing you can push yourself past your perceived limits, and meeting incredible people solidified that decision for me. I know for a fact I am a better, stronger, and more successful person because of the skills and confidence I’ve gained by doing fitness.

Sometimes the best things in our lives are the things we never knew we needed!
