That day-after-the-workout soreness—sometimes it feels like a badge of honor, other times like a punishment. You may even find yourself asking:
“Is being sore a good thing? Should I push through it? Does this mean I’m getting stronger?”
At Shark Bite Fitness, we hear these questions all the time, especially from new members just getting back into a routine. And the truth is, soreness isn’t always what people think it is.
Let’s break down what that sore feeling really means—and when to lean into it, when to ease up, and when to celebrate it.
First, What Is Muscle Soreness?
That stiff, achy feeling you get after a tough workout is called DOMS, or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It usually shows up 12 to 48 hours after exercise, especially if:
- You’re new to working out
- You increased intensity, weight, or reps
- You did movements that your body isn’t used to
DOMS is caused by microscopic tears in your muscle fibers—a normal part of building strength. Your body repairs those tears and makes your muscles stronger in the process.
So yes—some soreness is a sign of progress. But it’s not the only sign.
Soreness Doesn’t Equal Success
Here’s the big myth:
“If I’m not sore, the workout didn’t work.”
False. While soreness is a normal response to certain workouts, it’s not a requirement for progress. In fact, many highly effective workouts may leave you feeling energized, not sore.
When you train consistently, your body becomes more efficient at recovering. That’s a good thing! If you’re never sore, it may mean your recovery is improving, not that your workout was too easy.
At Shark Bite Fitness, we help you train smarter with programs that balance intensity and recovery, so you build strength without constantly feeling beat up.
When to Push Through (and When to Pull Back)
Mild to moderate soreness? Totally normal. Keep moving—just stay hydrated, stretch, and ease into your next session.
But if soreness is:
- Sharp or painful
- Preventing you from moving normally
- Lasting more than 3–4 days
…that could be a sign you went too hard, too soon, or need more recovery time.
Listening to your body is a skill. Our coaches will help you learn it and adjust your workouts accordingly so you get the most out of each session, safely.
Recovery Is Part of the Process
Soreness isn’t something to fear—but it is something to respect.
That’s why we encourage all members to prioritize:
- Hydration
- Proper warm-ups and cool-downs
- Sleep
- Active recovery, like walking, stretching, or lighter workout days
At Shark Bite Fitness, we help you find the right training rhythm: one that challenges your body and gives it room to grow.
